Double Tree wrote:Great photos of the mushrooms. The large orange ones are wooly chanterelles, or false chanterelles. They are not considered edible. Actual chanterelles (yum!) are noticeably different. The "wooly" comes from the scales you may see inside the top of the cup. Edible chanterelles are not scaly or usually so cupped. I'm no mushroom expert - but I do know the difference between false/wooly and regular, edible chanterelles. I don't think false chanterelles are deadly toxic to a healthy person, but will probably make you very sick. They do grow in the same areas.

OMG, that might explain why I've had a bad digestive disorder the last couple of days. I ate a whole bunch of those things. I knew I should have waited until after the mushroom hunting class.

I was actually serious Jerry.. I'm feeling much better so hopefully an organ transplant won't be necessary.

Yep, bad digestive problems for a day or two, is the usual reaction, from what I've read. I'm sure by now you've googled false chanterelles and found out you are probably going to be fine. Consider seeing your doctor though, and bring a sample of the mushroom.

No sample left but I am feeling much better, thanks. If my eyes turn yellow I'll be heading straight to the doctor.

I've been exploring this area for the last couple years and, I am fascinated by what a different forest it is; there is something about the trees and history of the area that makes it singular and dynamic - kind of creepy - similar to Larch Mt. The view from Tumala is amazing yet, the hike to Old Baldy is a great way to get some solitude. The view from Old Baldy is non-existent, but the newer trail following the ridgeline offers great views of Wildcat and over to Hood. Earlier this year I camped on the cliffs before Old Baldy and in the morning I did recon mission to explore the basin below them. It was pretty incredible. Has anyone done a bushwack or scramble all the way down to Eagle Creek? From below the cliffs, it looks possible.
On a similar note, has anyone gone to Eagle Creek via the trailhead off of Harvey Rd lately?

As you might guess, I favor the approach from near Twin Springs! I like it because it's a bit further from shooting and OHVs, but mostly because the trail has some nice views of the Tumala Lakes basin along the way -- these views, alone, make the trip worthwhile. There's also a lost trail that drops down into the basin from just west of the talus area (where the views are) if you're into exploring. I think it might have slightly less climbing, not sure... and it's close to Sheepshead Rock and Plaza Lake if you want to tack one of those onto your hike.
Until about 12-15 years ago, the OHVers liked to travel Abbott Road, but a landslide near the old spur to Salmon Butte has long made it impassable to 4-wheel vehicles, so the most you'll see are dirt bikes these days. Trivia fact: when I bought a new SUV way back in 1993 I made a point of driving AbbotT Road... little did I know that the somewhat sketchy area that we struggled through at the time was the beginning of a major landslide that would total the road!
I used to favor simply closing the road, if only because it was the sole reason for the Roaring River not coming into the Salmon-Huck wilderness back in 1984. But with the RR now protected, I'd like to see the road repurposed for mountain bikes. It's about as close to a wilderness ride as you can have, with wilderness on both sides of the road! It's certainly not appropriate for OHVs.
...whoops... apologies for the mini-soapbox!

Not sure if this is the exact area you're talking about, but in 2008 splitercat and several others went to Chak Chak Falls, although they approached from Eagle Creek rather than descending from above.
